Recitations

Image of coin with head on obverse saying

The original recitals site (featuring this 1990s logo) was created for (and by) the Classics teaching staff at Harvard to help students grasp the vital performative aspect of ancient literature. Selections were chosen because of their inclusion in various Harvard introductory-level language courses, as an aid to pronunciation and meter.

The initial project developer, Thomas Jenkins (PhD in Classical Philology, Harvard University 1999; now Professor of Classical Studies at Trinity University [TX]), would like to "thank all the professorial 'guinea pigs' below for their cheerful willingness to be poked and prodded with all manner of recording equipment."

Greek and Latin recordings and the corresponding text can be perused by category below. Find all available audio files from the project, including some English readings, on the Harvard Classics SoundCloud page.
