David Gordon Mitten, 1935–2022

January 21, 2022

With heavy hearts we remember our treasured friend and colleague, David Mitten, James Loeb Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology, Emeritus, who passed away peacefully at his home in Cambridge on the morning of January 18, 2022. A renowned teacher, scholar, and museum curator, Professor Mitten had a transformative effect on countless students and colleagues over the course of a Harvard career that began in 1957. His course on “Images of Alexander the Great,” which regularly filled the basement theater in the Sackler Museum, was legendary. His impact on the Harvard Classics community will continue to be felt for many years to come.
