Margaret Alexiou (1939-2026)

It is with profound grief that we share with you the sad news of the death of Margaret Alexiou (George Seferis Professor of Modern Greek Studies and Professor of Comparative Literature, Emerita), who passed away peacefully earlier this week at her home in Walmer, England. One of the most impactful, insightful, and generous Neohellenists of the last fifty years, she educated three generations of scholars in Modern Greek Studies and related fields. 

Her studies in Byzantine and Modern Greek literature and cultures (most notably her magisterial The Ritual Lament in Greek Tradition and After Antiquity: Greek Language, Myth, and Metaphor) opened up new research areas and put forward innovative hermeneutic perspectives.
