Annual Department Prize Competitions

The following prizes and one fellowship will be awarded at the end of the spring semester by the Department of the Classics. In addition to the flyers linked below, see the Prizes section of our website and the official prize descriptions on the Prize Office website.
 

For undergraduates

  • Bowdoin Prizes: $5,000 awarded for the translation of a set text into classical Greek or Latin (winning entries must meet a high standard, and a prize is not always awarded)
  • Sargent Prize: $600 awarded for a metrical translation of a lyric poem by Horace
  • Lowell Scholarship Prize: $500 awarded for the best performance on an examination by a Sophomore or Junior in Latin and Latin literature (next year will be Greek)
  • Corey Fellowship: awarded for post-graduate study at a university in the United Kingdom or Europe (for Seniors only)

For graduates

  • Bowdoin Prizes (Note that winning entries must meet a high standard, and a prize is not always awarded):
    • Graduate Composition in Greek: $10,000 awarded for an original essay in Classical Latin
    • Graduate Composition in Latin: $10,000 awarded for an original essay in Classical Greek
