Critical and Comparative Approaches to Classics (GSAS Workshop, 2019–20)

This research workshop will explore approaches to the Greek and Roman classics and the classical tradition through the lens of various theoretical and methodological frameworks. The scope of the questions covered by this workshop include traditional literary-theoretical approaches from fields like psychoanalysis, gender and critical race studies, anthropology, and comparative literature, while also engaging with the broader tradition of classical reception. The workshop aims to open space for examination not just of the cultural remains of antiquity, but also of the methodologies and practices we use to examine them.
